William Tyndale Unit Study from Soli Deo Gloria Resources

Soli Deo Gloria.   "To God Alone The Glory."   Kim Kargbo chose this name for her curriculum company, because she desires for us to glorify God in all that we do, including educating our children.   She also wants the curriculum she writes to glorify God, not man.

Our family received one of Soli Deo Gloria's unit studies to review, via the TOS Homeschool Crew.  We received Kim's e-book unit study about William Tyndale.  This  1 week unit study is intended to serve as an introduction to unit studies for those who have never used this teaching method before.

One of the first things I noticed about this unit study is that it is very versatile.  It is not dependent on specific resources.  Instead, the author provides a list of suitable resources (books, videos, and online resources) for the parent to select from.  As with all unit studies, additional materials are needed to teach the course.  The e-book is essentially a teacher's guide explaining how to tie together the living books, videos, and other resources recommended.

This 21 page e-book begins with stating the purpose of the unit study, its learning objectives, its scope, and the grade levels (K-12).  It then provides preparation instructions and a suggested resource list, so the teacher will know what she needs to gather for the unit study.

The study is broken down into 5 days, with 6-9 activities to choose from each day.   The unit study also provides some historical background information for the teacher's use.  These lessons cover history, science, geography, language arts, character study, Bible, and art.  It does not include math in any way.

Although this unit study is intended to be used with all ages of students (K-12), it does not break each assignment down by grade level, other than the vocabulary words.  The parent/teacher will need to assess which activities their students are capable of completing, and adjust the difficulty level to each student's abilities.

The William Tyndale unit study is well-organized and easy to follow.  It's a good  introduction to unit studies.  The activities focus mainly on history, geography, Bible, and language arts.  There are two science connection lessons, and one art connection lesson in this unit study.  Parents can choose to "dig deeper" in these subjects, by adding in more materials related to the topics.

My children enjoyed the activity sheets Kim recommends we print to go along with the William Tyndale unit study.   They didn't enjoy the other assignments as much, but that isn't a surprise.  The worksheets seemed like fun, and the unit study assignments seemed more like schoolwork.   Many things were handled through oral discussion, which helped.   However, please bear in mind that my children are just returning to schoolwork after a maternity break,  so there was also an element of trying to get "back in the habit" of doing schoolwork for our family.   The unit study itself was enjoyable, easy for me to use, and a good way to cover a topic with all the different ages of children.

You can view samples of the William Tyndale unit study HERE.   This unit study is only available as an e-book, which is in the form of a PDF download.   You can purchase the William Tyndale unit study from Soli Deo Gloria for $8.00.   There are  several free resources available at their website.  (Soli Deo Gloria resources are also available from CurrClick.com and The Old Schoolhouse Store.)
