Review and Giveaway: Introducing Theo

My kids love watching cartoons.  Whose kids don't?  I love finding quality Christian cartoons for them to watch that teach them TRUTH.  Though we have many movies that do teach truths about God, we do not have any that teach Christian theology in an organized way.  Usually we have a 30 minute movie with one little gem of Biblical truth or Christian value expressed.  But Theo is different.  Theo teaches theology to our children in easily understood and enjoyable ways.

This dream of teaching theology to children using humor and cartoons was born in the heart of Mike Joens over thirty years ago.  While he waited for God to bring his dream to fruition, Mike Joens honed his cartooning and production skills in the secular and Christian world of cartoons.  If you've viewed the McGee & Me movies, or the Adventures in Odyssey cartoons, then you'll recognize Mike Joens' style in the Theo movies.

So what will you find in a Theo movie?  Well, you'll find Luther and Belfry -- two charming little mice who are witnesses to each lesson that the grandfatherly Theo shares with the viewers.  They also offer comic relief with their antics as they scamper about Theo's charming and warm country cottage.

The introductory DVD I received (and 2 readers can win) includes the first episode - Saving Faith, as well as the bonus episode - Good News.  Saving Faith is a ten minute lesson but Good News is a 5 minute presentation of the gospel message that is available on their website and included on each DVD.

The animation of Theo is excellent and warm, and the changing styles of animation throughout the episodes hold children's interest.  Changing styles?  Well, the animation style changes when Theo starts teaching.  The cartoon demonstrations enhance Theo's explanations perfectly -- with color, humor, and action.

You can view the bonus episode, Good News, right here.  It is being offered free on the Theo Presents website, for download or online viewing.

I admit that at first I was disappointed by the short nature of these episodes.  But, their  length helps maintain the focus and interest of the children for the entire episode.  It also makes them perfect for use in a group setting, allowing time for discussion and other activities afterward.  Theo is perfect for family use, as well as church use.  In fact, the makers are partnering with Lifeway Christian to create a corresponding curriculum for church use.  Parent Guides are also available for download, for home use.

The very first Theo DVD is available NOW for $14.99.  It is entitled God's Love and it includes 3 episodes, a bonus episode, and two special features:

  1. Saving Faith

  2. Loving Obedience

  3. Forgiveness

  4. Bonus Episode: Good News

  5. Special Feature:  Animation Basics

  6. Special Feature:  A Chat with Mike Joens, the Creator of Theo

Theo episodes can be purchased from the Theo Presents store in DVD format, or as instant downloads.   The DVD can also be purchased from Amazon.   Theo Presents also has a buy-one-give-one program, which sends Theo DVDs around the world through the ministry of Child Evangelism Fellowship.
