As a small girl, I remember being fascinated by my mom's purse.  As a mom, I've used my purse (and the treasures it held) to occupy a young child and keep them quiet from time to time.  Of course, it only seems natural that the secrets in Mama's purse would one day turn into a book.

Mama's Purse is a zany rhyming story about all the incredible things that can be found in Mama's purse.  Most of the time, the rhyme flows naturally and the book is a creative, silly story about a purse filled with some wild things.  Not just some, but a LOT of crazy things like baboons, raccoons, the moon, and typhoons.  Occasionally, as I read the story to my children, I thought ... "okay, now we're trying too hard".  I prefer the first part of the book over the second part where the author begins to speak to the reader about what is in their mama's purse.  The transition between the two just doesn't flow as well as it could.

The cartoonish illustrations aren't my favorite style, but they are very colorful and my children enjoy looking at them. Each page illustrates the crazy things mentioned that pop out of the purse.   My children enjoy pointing to each item in the picture as I say it, though some of the items mentioned aren't things that my younger children recognized.  I've had to point certain items out to them, since they didn't know what a golf tee was, or that a hare was a rabbit.

Although the book isn't my favorite book, my 2 year old, 4 year old and 7 year old children keep requesting that I read it to them.  They enjoy it and I've read it repeatedly since it arrived in our home.  Sometimes I just have to turn off my critical side and enjoy the silliness of the book with my children.  It's not my favorite book to read to them, but it's one of their current favorites.  So I'll defer to their preferences and give it one and a half thumbs-up ... one thumbs-up from my kids and one half-way up from me.
